The snow abated as night fell, and in the early hours of the morning, after a pass-through by the big county snow plow, pickup trucks with blades hit the streets in force. By the time the sun rose in the gray sky, electricity had been restored to most of the town and the main roads were narrow thoroughfares between banks of white snow. One of the frontloaded vehicles was finally scraping its way down Cricket Bluff.

Renee looked at herself in the bathroom mirror, her eyes sunken and dark and the tone of her skin flat. Her hair was a total mess. Last night had been rough to say the least. Half-awake, half-asleep, the visions were relentless. Lila tugging at Wade’s tie, bringing him down to her mouth. Wade, seduced, not knowing what to do, and devious Lila, so smug, victorious. Lila and Wade tangled together, as nude as a classical sculpture, sheets writhing all around them like a storm-tossed ocean. Of course, he would give himself up and enjoy it because he was a man, and therefore blameless. Men were beasts, incapable of controlling their appetites. Lila was the one who was really in control of the seduction. She was the woman.

What if they stayed up late talking? And Lila just leaned closer and closer? Oh, God, what if there was alcohol involved?

“Hey, Mom?” Renee called down the stairs, still staring at herself in the bathroom mirror. She now knew what she was going to do.

“Yes, baby?”

“I’m going to go open up the store,” Renee lied. If she told her mother she was going out to look for Lila, she would insist that Lila was fine, and that Renee was overreacting. Worse, she might demand to come with her. But if she thought that her daughter was going to Never Enuff Stuff, she’d be happy. After all, the shop was the only thing in life she loved more than her daughters.

“Are you sure, baby?” Mrs. Malone called back. “No one is going to be coming by today. People are likely still snowed in. We’re still snowed! in”

“I know,” Renee agreed. “I’d like to at least leave a sign on the door, letting people know when we’ll be open again. People need us, Mom.”

“All right, all right,” Mrs. Malone grumbled, her tone fading. “You’re right. We’ll go when the roads are clear.”

“No,” Renee commanded, her voice unnecessarily sharp. “No. I’ll go on my own now. It’s fine.”
